Summary
Pedro de Verona Rodrigues Pires, the ex-president of Cape Verde, won the Ibrahim Prize for
Achievement in African Leadership (an award that had not been given out to a former leader in the past two years.
The Ibrahim was given to Pires for a multitude of reasons, but two main reasons was that under the governing of Pires,
Cape Verde became one of two African countries to step up from the UN's 'least developed countries' and Pires didn't try
to alter their Constitution to try to be reelected, even though others asked him to run again. The prize is $5 million
over the span of 10 years and $200,000 every year after for the rest of his life.

Thoughts
My thoughts are the same as they were with the culture journal report, although there are differences when looking
at this article for political reasons instead of cultural reasons. I think that Pires's insistence on not running for reelection
or altering of their constitution gives way to a time of Cape Verde presidents who will have to overcome the great
precedent set before them.

Importance
Future presidents will follow in his footsteps and continue to advance the nation forward for many years to come.
The citizens of Cape Verde will compare all following presidents to Pires. If the citizens become unhappy with
a president, then they know better about what to change, how to change it, and what would be best for the country.
It has also paved the way for other African countries to begin advancing and working their way up to becoming
more developed. Pires has become a symbol of accomplishment and moral to every African country and
many other countries around the world.
